Sunday, 18. November, Zurich & Varna (Nicolas Camenisch)

Archaeological Museum Varna

That day we woke up quite early and ate lunch together. Martin had recommended us to try a nearby escape room and we booked it for the late afternoon. To kill the time in between we went to the archeological museum nearby. They had a great selection of ancient art and treasure. We then ate some lunch at a subway and went back to the hotel. The location of the escape room was right next to our hotel by the sea. We were rather excited, also because Martin spoke very high of it. After finding the right place we were introduced to the story by a young lady. We were supposed to be members of the American mafia trying to steal money from Al Capone. The puzzles turned out to be quite challenging and we did not manage to solve the room within the hour given to us. All in all, I have to say it was a lot of fun.

Nicolas working on his laptop during a bus drive

After packing all our belongings we left the hotel. The organisers of the contest had arranged a transfer to come pick us up at around 4pm and we had some time left to kill. Since we also had to find a place to eat and maybe wanted to do some shopping, we went to the biggest mall we could find. Although the prices were almost suspiciously low, none of us was particularly interested in fashion or jewellery. With the help of martin and wild hand gestures we then ordered some lunch in a local restaurant and I took a short nap. Shortly after, we sat in a bus driving us in direction of the city Shumen in which the contest was going to be held. During the journey I listened to some relaxing music and enjoyed the Bulgarian landscape on the other side of the window. We only stoped once at the airport to pick up some Russians. When arriving at the hotel in Shumen, we were welcomed by a group of local guides. They offered us some traditional Bulgarian food and drinks. I liked it a lot. The rest of the evening we spent separated in our rooms enjoying our beds after the long yours and more or less successfully trying to connect to the wifi network.

Some Rocks near the Madara Rider UNESCO World Heritage Site

Since it was the first official day of the event, we got up relatively early. After getting lost in the most confusing staircase you can imagine, I entered the breakfast hall through the kitchen. The others were already eating and talking about their expectations for the upcoming excursion that was planned for us during the morning. The bus drive was rather short and shortly after, we arrived at the destination. Given that most of our team was not particularly fluid in either of Russian, Bulgarian or Serbian, we had no idea what to expect and just followed the crowd. We walked up some stairs leading up a hill and just as I started to enjoy the walk, everyone came to a stop and a women with amplified voice started to speak about something in a language unknown to me. Slightly confused, we tried to figure out what on earth would be worth talking about that much. Observing the direction that people were facing in, I was able to locate the object of interest: A big stone. The Swiss team spent the rest of the excursion cracking jokes about how stones are apparently very special in Bulgaria and trying to ignore the constant loud Russian voice. After the excursion we had a practice session to get used to the computers they had set up for us.

Friday, 23. November, Shumen (Tobias Feigenwinter)

This was the first day of the competition. The transfer to the contest hall started at 08:00 so we had to get up really early. An hour later, the first five hours of contest started. We were given three tasks, two of which were already quite hard to understand and almost impossible for us to solve - the maximum number of points any one of us got at either of them was 8 out of 100. For one of them you even needed to use a maximum flow algorithm and that is banned at IOI. The first task wasn’t easy either, but all of us managed to get some points. It was called “ruler”. We were given a number n and we had to construct a ruler with n markings at integer positions that is as short as possible. However, every difference of two (not necessarily adjacent) markings has to be unique. After the contest, we went back to the hotel to talk about the tasks and, most importantly, to relax.

Saturday, 24. November, Shumen (Tobias Feigenwinter)

The second day of the competition started the same as the first. We had to solve three more tasks and once more, one of them used max flow. Again, we can be happy with our results, especially in the task “Park”: Only four contestants got 70 points in that task, and two of them were part of our team! In the evening of that day, there was the closing ceremony. We were greeted with some musical performances, after that the organisers thanked all the sponsors and generally talked way too much for anyone to keep listening. Then, the medals were awarded. Our team managed to get two bronze ones. We ended the day with a contestants party back at the hotel.

The Swiss delegation at IATI 2018
